Patron Spotlight

If you are looking for a sense of community and connection at Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre, you will likely find it with featured member Mark M. Known for his love of lap swimming and welcoming presence on the pool deck, Mark has been a familiar face at our facility for over two decades.

A Perfect Fit from Day One

Mark’s journey with Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre began shortly after moving to the Sunshine Coast back in 2002 or 2003.

"It was a no-brainer for me, we lived just across the street from an Olympic pool. How perfect was that?" Mark shares.

For Mark, swimming is deeply personal and meditative.

"I’ve always loved swimming, especially in the slow lane, and some days, alas not always, I drift into a state of zen where I have no idea how long I’ve been in the pool or how far I’ve gone," he explains. “A big part of that is because my father was a wonderful swimmer. When I’m in the water, lake, ocean, river or pool, it doesn’t matter, we’re together again."

Community and Motivation

While staying fit and finding that state of zen are wonderful perks, what keeps Mark coming back day after day is the people.

"For me the number one reason is the group of pool friends I see most days," Mark says. "The fact that we’re swimming laps, sometimes in what we call cold water, and paying for the privilege no less, means that before we even speak to each other, we know we have something in common. This was really highlighted during lockdown, when we didn’t see each other for a while and were so happy when we finally got to be together again. Calling them my friends is a bit inaccurate, we are really a family of choice."

Mark’s Advice for Fellow Swimmers

For anyone wanting to make Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre a permanent part of their routine, Mark says,

"Go for it! Your fellow swimmers are wonderful, and the staff all work hard to make sure it’s a great experience."

"Go slow. Maybe buy a 10-pass before investing in the annual pass, and try to take the signs, like Slow Lane, seriously, please. Be kind to yourself and listen to your body. If you try something new and it doesn’t work for whatever reason, it’s not the end of the world. Regardless of the season, weather or time of day, always wear sunscreen!"

Next time you see Mark around the pool, be sure to say hello, grab a lane, and enjoy the wonderful community here at Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre!
